Chiropractic is a unique type of healthcare that operates under the simple fact that the alignment of the spine dictates the function of the body. The nervous system, which is contained and courses through the spinal column, controls all body functions and processes. Changes in the alignment of the spinal column can cause interference within the nervous system. This condition is called a “SUBLUXATION.”

A subluxation is simply a misalignment of the bones in the spine resulting in mechanical stress to the surrounding nerves, muscles, ligaments, and discs. Subluxations can cause pain, disc and joint degeneration (arthritis) and they can cause more complex, systemic health conditions, such as breathing or digestive problems. A chiropractor is the only type of doctor in the field of healthcare trained to detect and correct spinal misalignments.

Spinal misalignments are determined by an examination and x-rays.  Once the location and direction of the spinal misalignments are determined, the chiropractor performs a series of adjustments to return the spine to its proper position.  Other procedures, such as spinal exercises, may also be performed to help strengthen the surrounding muscles to hold the spine in its normal, aligned position.  Maintaining normal spinal alignment with chiropractic care is a vital necessity for good health.

Massage therapy is the scientific manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for the purpose of normalizing those tissues and consists of manual techniques that include applying fixed or movable pressure, holding, and/or causing movement of or to the body.  Massage is known to increase the circulation and flow of blood and lymph, affect the nervous system through stimulation or sedation, reduce muscular tension or flaccidity, and promotes tissue healing.

  • Reduction of muscle tension and stiffness
  • Releif of Muscle Spasms
  • Greater flexibility and range of motion
  • Promotion of deeper and easier breathing
  • Increase of the ease and efficiency of movement
  • Promotion  of faster healing of soft tissue injuries
  • Enhancement in the health and nourishment of skin
  • Reduction in anxiety levels

Kinesio Taping is a technique based on the body’s own natural healing process.  It gives support and stability to joints and muscles without affecting circulation and range of motion.  Kinesio taping exhibits its efficacy through the activation of neurological and circulatory systems.  Muscles are not only attributed to the movements of the body but also aid in the circulation of venous and lymph flows, body temperature, etc.

Kinesio taping came about from the idea of treating the muscles in order to activate the body’s own healing process.  Using elastic tape, it was discovered that muscles and other tissues could be helped by outside assistance.  The Kinesio Taping Method is applied over muscles to reduce pain and inflammation, relax overused tired muscles, and to support muscles in movement on a 24 hour a day basis.  It is non-restrictive and allows for full range of motion.

  • Non-restrictive allowing for full range of motion
  • Does not impair circulation
  • Provides support to the muscles and joints
  • Can be applied and used for multiple days in a row
  • No Negative Side Effects
  • Reduces muscular and joint pains

Kinesio Taping can be used for a number of different ailments.  It is used for preventive maintenance, edema, and pain management.

Uses

  • Hamstring/Groin Injury
  • Rotator Cuff Injury
  • Low Back Spasms/Strain
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Patella Tracking
  • Pre/Post Surgical Edema

Electric muscle stimulation (EMS) is a type of therapy in which electrical impulses are generated and travel through electrodes on a patient’s skin and into the muscle.  The impulses mimic the central nervous system’s impulses and cause the muscle to contract.

EMS has the potential to serve as a strength training tool for healthy subjects and athletes; a rehabilitation and preventive tool for partially or totally immobilized patients; and a testing tool for evaluating neuromuscular function.  The use of EMS can improve fatigue resistance (i.e. endurance) as well as improvement and strengthening of skeletal muscles.

  • Physical therapy to prevent disuse muscle atrophy
  • Pain Therapy
  • Muscle Re-education (physical therapy)
  • To increase mobility
  • Strengthen muscles

Cryotherapy is a localized or whole-body exposure to subzero temperatures to decrease inflammation, increase cellular survival, decrease pain and spasms, and promote overall health. It is not a medical procedure, but a non-invasive option for people seeking faster recovery and better health.

  • Faster muscle recovery
  • Promotes healthier skin complexion
  • Invigorates the mind
  • Improves sleep pattern
  • Assists with cellulite reduction
  • Effective with chronic pain management
  • Faster surgical recovery
  • Reduces stress & anxiety

An x-ray is a non-invasive test that may be necessary to determine the status of bone structures as well as alignments or any deviations that may be occurring.  An assessment of x-rays will help determine the right course of treatment.

When you hear the word ultrasound, you may be thinking of the procedure used in an OB-GYN office during a prenatal visit.  While this a great imaging technique, ultrasound therapy in this setting is used for therapeutic procedures.

Ultrasound therapy has been used as a treatment for musculoskeletal injuries as it helps in rapidly healing injured tissues while decreasing pain.

Benefits

  • Increased elasticity of the collagen found in joint capsules, tendons, and scar tissue
  • An increase in the motor as well as the sensory nerve conduction which aids in pain reduction
  • Increased blood flow
  • Reduction of muscle spasm from an altered contractile activity of muscle

Being in good health begins with good nutrition. What goes into our bodies determines what are body is going to put out. A poor diet and inactive life style can lead to illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension as well as fatigue and a poor mood.

Eating a properly balanced diet can lead to a reductions of symptoms (i.e. fatigue, depression) and will help your body heal and reach optimal levels of health and physical mobility.  Different people have different dietary needs and we at Island Chiropractics will help you determine what the proper diet is for you.

  • A diet low in fats, cholesterol, and sodium can lower your risk of heart disease
  • A diet rich in calcium and vitamin D keeps bones and teeth strong and helps prevent bone loss associated with osteoporosis.
  • A healthy diet leads to increased energy levels
  • Proper nutrition increases blood flow to the brain which protects cells and can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
  • A healthy diet will lead to greater weight control.
